When I really think about the South African(SA) music I ask myself that do we support our South African music or we don’t that we even forget the songs that our grandmothers taught and even forget songs of our South African artists Sometimes I wonder what the future hold for the South African music because one can never be sure when the youth really don’t listen to the songs of artist like late Mama Mariam makeba who sang beautiful jazz songs about Our Country. Nowadays the youth prefers to listen to songs of:
v Beyoncé Knowles
v Robyn Rihanna Fenty
v Jay zee(Shawn Corey Carter)
v Justin bieber
v And more
You find that the youth listens to them because they are cool and famous that’s why they listen to them is no longer about what the songs mean and because their friends listens to them. Are we really so persuaded by people to listen to music or is it because the world is changing that we forget the songs of our culture and introducing new once .

The king of kwaito Arthur mafokate made a speech at the 18 Annual SAMA Awards on the 30th April 2012 saying that “South African music never dies “I find it hard to believe that look at the Music show in South Africa like Live Club808 and even the SoweTOP10 you find that they play American music.

Do you agree that South African music never dies or it has already died?
South African music will never die. The music represent who we are and where we come from. I don't see it will vanish as time goes by because there are new artists such as Zahara, Thandiswa Mazwai, etc. These artists will continue to represent our culture and our religions and it will impact on the lives of our future generations.
ReplyDeletebut i really think that we don't really listen to their music
Deletei love your blog nowadays music that take the bars is international music, most of the youth do not really care about songs such Mariam makeba which reinforce and give us big picture of what was happening back in the days,
ReplyDeleteYes Trot our generation is more interested about the glitz and glamour, rumours, the vibe and lifestyle of our Beyonces'
Deleteyes i agree with you we are really in american songs we can't even support african music
DeleteThe problem with us(africans ) is we are into western music and we forget our roots...for the south african music to not die, we need to pass the music on to generation after generation... otherwise our music is on a process of dieng we ned to end that procees before it produce negative results to our country music.
ReplyDeleteyes pebetse we need to support our musicians but not buying piracy music because that just really killing the music
DeleteI agree with the statement that SA music will never die, even thought artists such as Mariam Makeba might be dead but they songs will always have a specail place in our hearts and the history of SA.
ReplyDeletesouth african music will never die but we as the citizens needs to support the artist ,stop piracy ,attend more of their events to give them the boost they need
ReplyDeletei agree with you nokuthula but to me piracy is just another situation thatis not really solved
DeleteDo we support South African Music? yes but not financially, I would rather copy music than buy 70 cds of my favourite artist.Well times have changed as a youth person I dont want to listen to music that makes me sleep, I want something with beats rythym and makes me jive. Cultural songs can stay at weddings and jazz festivals. I believe South African Music has not died out have a look at the sama awards catagories @ http://www.kasitimes.co.za/events-and-updates/sama-awards-2012-winners
ReplyDeleteokay will do that so do you realise that the more we into other wwe forget about the others
Deletei think the South African music has died in that most of the citizens now adays pays more attention to the american music while the South African artists immitates their styles.
ReplyDeleteI dont think SA muscic has died, we as South Africans have stopped supporting the local music industry by prefering to surpport the international music more, am saying this because we would rather buy copies of international artists, but private or not at all even attempt listening to local artists.
