INFLUENCE IN MUSIC ON SOCIETY

How does music influence us ?
Recently in class we were having a speech presentation on three topics which where given but mostly my fellow student presented on the issue that “should condoms be contributed to our high school pupils”. Most of them agreed as they mention that we as the youth of nowadays are exposed to a lot of things like:
·         Social media which teach us about different issues that we fail to have explanations from our parents because social media does have facts on them.
·         The media which expose issues on sex, money and alcohol which as the youth adapt to, to look like them.
·         And the most surprisingly influential tool music which the youth listen to for example songs like sexual seduction by snoop doggy
some of the rappers that influenced in alcohol, sex,
drugs and money source: Culies Finest Rappers
One in three popular songs contains explicit references to sex, drug or alcohol use, according to a new report in The Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. That means kids are receiving about 35 references to substance abuse for every hour of music they listen to according to this research.
Studies have long shown that media messages have a pronounced impact on childhood risk behaviours. Exposure to images of smoking in movies influences a child’s risk for picking up the habit. Alcohol use in movies and promotions is also linked to actual alcohol use. more on the influence of music.
“Adolescents are heavily exposed to lyrics describing degrading sex in popular music, and this exposure is associated with early sexual experience among them in an urban population of youth at high risk for risky sexual behaviour.

These results provide further support for the need for additional research and educational intervention in this area” quote by Brian A. Primack
This means that we don’t have control on the social media, music and other media influence on the youth of today, so I think it is better to teach them on these issues before they adapt to them in the social media or music. We as organisation or companies especial industries that allow such music to be release, we need to make sure that we support campaigns like rap-it-up that have educational system for the youth.

  1. Unless musicians change lyrics to their songs then nothing will ever change and bare in mind that Hop-Hop is one popular genre of music - which is the most where you'll find such lyrics.

  2. Our operational organisation that produces and distributing such music should interven and motivate children and teens never to do things they saw on TV. They should also talk to their artists not expose drugs, alcohol, and sex in their videos. They should keep it simple as they are the inspiration of the future generations.

  4. the best solution is that musicians should be told of the kind of influence their songs have on children and that if a musician realease songs that expose our kids to sex then the song must not be played on radios, tv etc

  5. Yes music plays a huge role in influencing the youth I agree with you that we should educate the youth that what they are seeing or hiring on those songs is not true they are just been made to be sold so that they can understand and not be influenced by them.

  6. the media give as a variety in music and its really up to the end users to choose the right influence, because to most of these rappers this is a way of putting bread on the table and people are entertained by it.

  7. Music has a great influence on people regardless of age but we as individuals we must choose which one to listen to because listening to the wrong one might lead us to leave lives that we do not want at the end of the day.

  9. I think that you are right by suggesting campaigns like 'Rap-it-up'. But we should remeber that we cannot exactly stop children fronm being exposed to such things, we just have to make sure that they know what is right and what is wrong.

    1. yes thee workplace taht why i recommend such a campaign which teaches about songs and drugs etc. and also as societies we need to open up to such issues with the youth because if we don't they will adopt to the music which the music is not in a correct way

  10. A major part of popular music has always involved pushing the boundaries of artistic expression. In the music industry today, artists are pushing the limits of what is acceptable and unacceptable to some cultures. But, who benefits from the use of explicit lyrics in music? One can argue that it is an attempt to drive record sales through sparking controversy, but maybe it is just how the artist fully expresses themself. This fine line that divides vulgarity from artistic expression is an issue that has plagued society. No matter what the motive behind the explicitness of popular music, there are social implications, believe me when I say this, Grace.
